In the early 1980s Henry Moore had been asked by Walter Rossi, the Italian printer with whom he had previously worked, whether he would consider making a small group of mother and child etchings (a theme to which Moore returned throughout his life). Moore was no longer visiting Italy but the idea persisted. Once he began he became so enthralled that he produced many more images than anyone had anticipated.
Moore made 30 etchings and entrusted the two master printers, James Collyer and John Crossley, of J C Editions with proofing the plates. The suite would have no doubt grown larger still had illness not intervened.
The total number of plates (109 for the 30 etchings) took two and a half years to edition and as Moore’s health declined the arrival of each newly printed edition provided him with one of his major sources of pleasure. He was delighted to see the complete set of 30 when he signed the last edition, just one month before he died.
The edition published in 1986 comprised 80 portfolios of which 65 were for sale. Each print is numbered and signed in pencil by the artist. |
