The Curwen Archive
(23 Jul 2003) |
We are pleased to have been able to purchase these original Henry Moore prints from the Moore Curwen Archive. Although the prints are unsigned, a letter signed by Stanley Jones, director of the Curwen Press, guaranteeing its authenticity, accompanies each print.
The relationship between Henry Moore and Stanley Jones was a long and fruitful one. They met in 1958 and Jones printed Moore’s lithographs until the artist’s death in 1986. Moore said of Stanley Jones, ‘Stanley is one of the nicest people I know. He is so amenable, so receptive to any suggestion of experiment. And compared to Mourlot and the other continental lithographers, the big advantage of Curwen is that it is on the spot…it is almost the same as working in my studio.’
As William Scott wrote, ‘Stanley and the Curwen Press embarked on a revolution in art lithography, bringing the artist and printer together as in France. I was fortunate in being an early visit to the studio and listened to Stanley on the importance of quality in printing paper and ink. His message got through and today, thanks to the Curwen Press we have a level of artist lithography of which we can be justly proud.’ |
